Now that you have picked the home you have dreamed of, it is time to furnish it. However, after all of the killer expenses that have come out of your pocket from the down payment, earnest money to closing costs, you may be feeling a little strapped for cash. Don’t despair, there are so many places where you can find the furnishings that will make your home a true oasis. With a little patience and creativity, you can find everything you need and want.
Wherever you live there are secondhand stores, and they offer things that have been gently used that can find a whole new life in your home. The best thing about these stores is their affordability. Many times their owners are willing to negotiate on the prices. These are places where rare finds can be had. You may find things from bygone eras up to present day stylings.
I was driving home from an appointment and saw a shelf on display outside of an antique shop. As I flew past while in the left lane, that shelf and I made contact. I made a couple of illegal lane changes and turns down unfamiliar streets and made it back to “my” shelf. The shelf was an old store display for Tequila. This shelf became the inspiration for my home’s pantry design—yes with lots of Tequilas interspersed among the canned corn. The point is, you can find a treasure when you least expect.
A small cautionary tale about what not to buy second hand—vacuum cleaners would not be something I’d buy if I were prone to allergies. If you are allergic to pet dander, be really careful. The previous owner may have had a dog, three cats and a hamster and been a meticulous housekeeper. You don’t want to have to wonder why your eyes are size of eggs and suddenly ruby red after vacuuming.
So, take a Saturday morning drive, get a great cup of coffee and look for these local treasure boxes. You may find more than your wildest dreams could have asked for. You may find inspiration or find something out there that will set the tone for a single room or your whole home.
Here’s to happy hunting!
