Here in southern California, we are experiencing severe drought conditions. As I was watching the news the other day, I saw flooded cities all over the eastern U.S. Then I look at our local weather and we can’t buy a raindrop.
Los Angeles sits in a beautiful arid area of the country. We have mountains around us and a big, beautiful ocean to our west. We have more than our share of beautiful blue skies for days on end. Personally, sometimes I feel a bit guilty with our great weather abundance given my Ohio roots. Then, I get over it when I remember shoveling snow just to get to my car.
Among the fantastic things that LA has are great beauty and has a water nightmare. We are in the middle of a curse personified. Right now, we are so dry and in need of lifegiving rain. Here’s hoping for a nice El Nino season! Until then, we must deal with water restrictions imposed by the city and county. Watering of odd numbered addresses on Monday and Fridays for and even numbered addresses on Thursdays and Sundays is the reality that homeowners are dealing with currently.
One of the things that southern Californians love, is being able to have beautiful yards. One way to accomplish this during these challenging times is to find drought resistant plants and plants native to this region.
My first thoughts go toward palms, cacti and succulents. Sago Palms are look beautiful in yards. Their fronds spread, so take care when planting lower plants nearby. Agave plants can last for years and have wonderful medicinal properties. Jade plants come in many different varieties and are easy to care for. With the proper care, these gorgeous plants will last for years.
